Summer Activities

Saalbach is a great centre for summer activities, whether you are looking for an active holiday or something more relaxing.  Four cable cars run all summer long, taking you up to the magnificant views at the top of the mountains. Below are a few ideas - or pick up an information leaflet at the Tourist Office

Walking and Hiking

Easy walks along the valley from Saalbach to Hinterglemm and beyond.  Or enjoy the sunshine Sun Promenade walk that rises gently out of the village towards Jausern, from where there is a bus back to Saalbach if you do not want to walk back along the riverside walk.

There are panorama walks at the top of the Kohlmais, Schattberg and Reiterkogel lifts - ride the cable cars up and enjoy the fantastic views and nature.

The beautiful butterfly at the top of the page is a Camberwell Beauty or Mourning Cloak - Nymphalis antiopa -  a very rare sight in the UK, but if you are lucky you may see one in the meadows around Saalbach.

Mountain hikes are available in abundence. Find your own way along the many marked trails (remember to get a free map from the Tourist Office) or join one of the organised walks from the Tourist Office. Once a week there is even a 6-hour walk to Kitzbuhel.

Adventure Trails for Kids

Two facinating adventure / treasure hunt trails for children - on Kohlmais in Saalbach and Reiterkogel in Hinterglemm. Details at the cable car stations.

Mountain Biking and Cycling

The area around Saalbach is rapidly becoming one of the most popular mountain bike destinations in Europe.  For those new to the sport, there is the beginners area in the village centre and the easy Montelino track on the Kohlmais, just above the village in Saalbach. Hard core mountain biking takes place on the Schattberg in Saalbach, Reiterkogel in Hinterglemm or in the extreme Bike Park in Leogang

Rent a great range of bikes, including e-bikes, from Hagleitner or Furstauer in Saalbach.

There is easy cycling along the valley - to Hinterglemm and Lengau or to Zell am See.

Head of the Valley

Take the free bus to the end of the valley at Lengau. From there take the free sightseeing train, or enjoy an easy 30 minute walk up to the beautiful park at the head of the valley.  Here you will find a working farm with animals for the children to pet, a water park, zip-wires and high ropes park, trampolines and much more.  Walk through the park and further up the valley to the Saalalm hut for a magnificent panorama view of the valley - and a cold beer.

Zip-trek, 'Go Ape'-style climbing trails and treetop walk

Situated at the head of the valley at Lengau past Hinterglemm - take the bus, drive or cycle, then a 30 minute walk or a fun ride on the valley train.

Golf

Courses at Zell am See and Maria Alm, both less than 30 minutes away.

Lake swimming

Swim in the clear lake surrounded by the stunning mountain landscape at Zell am See or at the naturist lake area at Ritzensee, Saalfelden
